PCi stands in solidarity with our Syrian friends and colleagues as they delight in the removal of the Assad Regime from power, and the freeing prisoners from Syria’s horrific jails. We grieve, alongside our friends, for those that have lost their lives to the cause of freedom since the start of the revolution in 2011 and stand with those families who may never know the fate of relatives who were disappeared.
Today Syrians share a freedom they have not known for more than 50 years. Syrian civil society has been preparing for this day for the past 13 years. Syrian organisations and activists have been working tirelessly to build relationships across divides and putting together detailed plans for how to build a just and equal society based on human rights principles. This is their moment.
As such, this is a time for international actors – including PCi – to listen and give space to our Syrian counterparts as they develop their responses to this rapidly evolving situation. No decisions or policy should be set by the international community without listening to a broad range of Syrian voices. We stand ready and willing to respond to requests for support – as and when our Syrian friends and colleagues define their priorities and their needs.
This is their moment!
